Members of the Wharton County Democratic Party met on Saturday August 12th at the Wharton Public Library to reorganize itself and choose officers for the Party. The meeting was called to order by Wharton County Democratic Party Chairman Joey Cardenas of Louise who was recently appointed to the position by State Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa in the wake of the untimely death of former county Chairwoman, Linda Bacca. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Mrs. Bacca and former Texas Governor Mark White which was followed by the reading of the Preamble to the Constitution.
The group was given an update on the state of the 13th Court of Appeals by Judge Dori Contreras who currently represents Wharton County on the court. She discussed the varied issues taken up by the court and the 20 counties that she represents. She introduced her assistant from her field office in Corpus Christi, Mr. Joe Ramirez to the group. And expressed her gratitude for the invitation to be present and speak.
After much discussion on a myriad range of issues, the members present elected Mr. Dave Mauch of El Campo as vice-Chair, Mr. Jeff Dixon of Wharton as secretary, and Mr. James Reese of East Barnard as treasurer. The assembled also elected to create five committees as follows: 1. Communications committee for outreach and messaging; 2. Municipality to track and gauge the rise of taxes and waste; 3.Candidate Recruitment committee to identify qualified individuals for office; 4. Veterans committee to assess and help speed the process of county veterans’ benefits; and 5. Legislative committee to identify local issues to present as polity at the Capitol in Austin.
The last order of business was to identify precinct chairs for the 12 voting precincts in the county of which three correspond to every county commissioner precinct. The meeting ended with the announcement that the Secretary of State will be hosting the County chairs of both political parties to State training on September 8th, in Austin, Texas.
